Necronomicon Several editions of this grimoire have appeared. Said to have first been published in about A.D. 730 in Arabic as Al Azif by Abdul Alhazred, an English translation is attributed to John Dee, though it turns out to be the invention of fantasist H. P. Lovecraft, author of supernatural and horror tales. It relates powerful formulas for calling up dangerous demigods and demons who are dedicated to destroying mankind.
