Written by Rich Montalvo

One of the most successful series of the 1970s was Happy Days, which is set in the late 1950s, early 1960s in Milwaukee, the heart of middle-class America. Happy Days tells the story of the Cunninghams, one of America's most beloved TV families.

In 1978 or 79 James Randi appeared as himself "The Amaz!ng Randi." During a benefit show that the lead character had arranged for a local orphanage. The magician that was hired to perform suddenly fell ill before the show even started. The Fonz recommended The Amaz!ng Randi as a replacement for the show.

How many other actors could play a whole family? Talk about range.

I always remember Happy Days as a great show, although this episode was definitely part of the "jumping the shark" phase of the series. Is there anything the producers thought the Fonz couldn't do...?!?

I think I recall this episode when I was around 8 years old. But I never made the connection until now that it was Randi. By the way, good job Randi. Kooky character's fit you well, it seems :)

And it was the Fonz who literally did a waterski jump over a shark (in case, like me, you didn't know or had forgotten).

Yes I did remember... thanks to that episode, the phrase "jumping the shark" has become TV industry slang for a TV show which was once good, but has resorted to ridiculous storylines to keep the series going. There is a great scene in "Arrested Development" where Henry Winkler (as a guest actor) leaves a studio and literally jumps a little statue of a shark that happens to be in his way. Champagne comedy...
