The Amaz!ng Meeting 7 Events
We have our usual lineup of fantastic and entertaining extracurricular events planned for TAM 7. These include magic shows, music, comedy, and even a talent show. Yes, you read that right. We're also holding a vaccine drive and partnering with Science-Based Medicine to hold a one-day conference in conjunction with TAM 7. Information and pricing is below; if you want to attend a specific event you must mark it on the registration form.
Continuing Education Unit Credits
As we have done in the past, the JREF is offering Continuing Education Unit credits to teachers who attend TAM. It's an educational event, so why not get credit for it? CEUs are given through Broward Community College and can be applied to your bi-yearly requirement. Make sure you enter your birthdate on the registration form in the Comments section. Important note: you can only receive the CEU credits if you attend all weekend; we cannot give them to daily attendees.
Penn & Teller Tickets
Every year, the magicians, professional liars, and friends of the JREF Penn & Teller offer discounted tickets to their Saturday and Sunday night shows at the Rio to TAM attendees. These tickets are $65, ten dollars off regular price. Their show has to be seen to be... well, not believed.
Thursday, July 9
Las Vegas Vaccine Drive
Did you know Las Vegas has some of the lowest vaccine rates in the nation? We at the JREF know that vaccines are an important part of raising a healthy child, and also know that many people actively spread nonsense about vaccines. To raise awareness for this critical piece of health care, the JREF is sponsoring a vaccine drive in Las Vegas. With the help of pediatrician and TAM 7 speaker Dr. Joe Albietz, we aim to vaccinate as many kids in the Las Vegas area as possible. By signing up to sponsor a child's vaccine, you will help prevent him or her from getting measles, mumps, rubella, and other vaccine-preventable illnesses. And maybe they'll also grow up to be an outspoken skeptic and help us defend science and reality.
All we are asking for from TAM attendees is a donation toward the vaccinations. There is no event to attend; doctors will be on hand at a clinic to administer the vaccinations.
Single vaccination cost: $16
Full course of vaccines: $25
(Note: vaccines are limited in number; any leftover money donated to this will go to the Southern Nevada Health District. Any donation size will be accepted, just use the Quantity field in the registration form to increase your donation.)
Thursday, July 9, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Science-Based Medicine Conference
The JREF is partnering with Dr. Steve Novella from the Science-Based Medicine blog to hold a conference on medicine, science, and the growing threat of antiscientific beliefs. Speakers will give presentations on homeopathy, chiropractic, and many other so-called "alternative medicines" that don't rely on the rigorous testing of real medicine. Doctors attending can receive continuing medical education (CME) credits, but anyone is welcome to come and learn about modern health care from skeptics and experts in the field. More details on this conference are available on Dr. Novella's Neurologica blog
$350 with CME credits
$150 without CME credits
Special: $100 with TAM registration
Thursday, July 9, 5:00 p.m.
TAM 7 officially opens for business with a reception on Thursday evening. This is a chance to get to know your fellow TAMmers and speakers before the sessions begin on Friday. Traditionally, quite a few speakers attend the reception, and there is also a short speech by Randi to get things started. It's quite a festive party.
Price: Free (plus cash bar)
Thursday, July 9, 8:00 p.m.
"Jamy Ian Swiss, Mac King, and Banachek"
Jamy Ian Swiss, Mac King and Banachek combine forces for a mystifying calvacade of illusion, mentalism, and legerdemain. Don't miss three legends of magic all in one show.
Friday, July 10, 12:00 - 1:30 p.m.
Luncheon with Randi
We are once again holding our annual fund-raising luncheon with Randi, where you can sit with our iconic leader and have him regale you with stories and dazzle you with sleight-of-hand. This is a unique opportunity to be up close and personal with a living legend. There are only 15 seats available, so hurry! And during the luncheon, keep an eye on your spoon. We hear they have a tendency to morph when Randi's nearby.
Friday, July 10, 9:00 - 10:30 p.m.
Double Feature! "The Nigerian Spam Scam Scam" and George Hrab
When actor Dean Cameron got the email we've all seen -- "Please help me, I am the beneficiary of $30 million!" -- he didn't delete it like the rest of us would. Instead, he responded in kind, taking the spammers for a ride that lasted well over a year. He turned this misadventure into a hilarious one-man show that has received accolades from the Los Angeles Times to Penn Jillette.
Also, musician, skeptic, and podcaster George Hrab will entertain the crowd with his outstanding mix of humor, tunes, and critical thinking. This is a must-see presentation.
Saturday, July 11, 7:30 - 10:00 p.m.
The JREF Talent Show: HAM Party
Are you talented? We're skeptical, so you'll have to prove it. We're throwing a good old-fashioned talent show, to see how well skeptics can do whatever it is they do. Sing, juggle, prestidigitate, tell jokes: show us what you've got. Rumor has it JREF staff will participate as well, so rotten tomatoes will be checked at the door.
The Top 3 winners will receive prizes, and the others will receive the undying devotion of their fellow JREFers, or, more likely, simply be made fun of.
Added bonus: George Hrab is MCing!
Price: $15 (plus cash bar; we will accept audience members paying at the door as well)
Sunday, July 12, 12:00 - 12:30 p.m.
James Randi Mentalism
After the official end of TAM7, James Randi himself will perform a mentalism act that will be sure to astound you -- he is, after all, James Randi. In between stories and jokes he will make a prediction that will baffle and entertain you, and be sure to keep you talking on the flight home.
Price: free (you can't beat that, folks!)
Sunday, July 12, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
The Million Dollar Challenge, Live!
This is a very special event: we have booked an applicant for our world-famous Million Dollar Challenge of proof of the paranormal! The applicant will be given the preliminary test in front of a live audience. This will be an actual challenge, so it's worth your time to stay a little late and see how this procedure is done. And who knows... maybe the applicant will pass this test, and proceed to the final test for the megabuck prize!
