If I had paranormal abilities....

.. then the first thing I'd do is win the $1M challenge. Not because I'd need the money ... after all, anybody who can't think of ways to parley such abilities into a billion dollars in very short order just isn't trying.

No, I'd do it because the challenge would be a good way of "getting the word out" that such abilities are worthy of serious scientific investigation, and because some big ideas may emerge for using those abilities for the betterment of humanity. Humanity certainly needs them! And up to now, I can't think of even one way humanity has advanced in health or happiness through paranormal means, whereas scientific and artistic endeavours have benefited us in so many wonderful ways.

I suspect that those who try for the prize do believe they actually have their claimed abilities, and are thinking along those lines.

Of course, the others, particularly the famous ones, have far too much to lose, and they know very well they won't be picking up the prize, so why would they attempt it? They can't actually give a real reason for their cowardice, so yet again in Randi's examples, we see their usual hiding place ... they resort to ad hominem against Randi, or often skeptics in general. Randi can wear their abuse as a badge of honour ... it shows just how effective he is at exposing the frauds.
