Well, speaking of indulgence, parents who kill disabled children get treated much, much better than parents who kill nondisabled children. I remember some years back the father of an autistic child told me that autism should be considered a terminal illness because it is just so hard for parents to have autistic children that they ought to be allowed to murder them if they like. In particular, parents who murder their autistic children should not ever be punished, because having to have an autistic child in the first place is "punishment enough." And while nobody else has ever put it as baldly as Terminal Illness Guy, I've heard similar sentiments from other people -- those with disabled family members and those who are just imagining what it would be like -- and a whole lot of repetition of the "having a disabled child is punishment enough" line. I'm surprised and heartened that they're bothering to charge LaBrie. I fully expect plenty of people to come out of the woodwork and start suggesting that because Jeremy was autistic, this is something that oughtn't to be pursued. His poor, poor mother ... burdened with a child like that ... how she must have suffered ... this is entirely understandable .... - harrisonM

Don't let the parents off too lightly

I understand your point that the parents may have been influenced by friends and family to avoid conventional medicine, but that does not absolve them of their responsibility to have considered all the options that they had to treat their child. Only a little research and checking would have shown them that pneumonia has been successfully treated millions of times using conventional western medicine. These people were not ignorant of modern medicine, they simply chose to dismiss it, at the cost of their child's life. - primowalker

While breastfeeding-is-best is great advice normally, sometimes it is insufficient. In this case, the 11 month old was only 12lbs and was losing weight! (5.7kg). Pneumonia is especially dangerous for a baby that underweight. It's also not unlikely that a very low caloric diet by the mother may have contributed (but it's also possible there were other reasons for inadequate supply). Whatever the reasons, the obvious neglect on the part of the parents here was likely *both* medical and nutritional. - Locklin

I am shocked by Mike's post. In Australia you need to look hard to find homoeopathy in a pharmacy. About the best I can find are magnetic underlays for beds.

So what is the difference between France and Australia that makes woo common in France but not Australia? - rjh02

homeopathy in France

I'm living in France at present and completely bewildered by the presence and power that homepathy has over the locals. Every pharmacy I have entered has a big homeopathy section, and many of the supermarket chains have adjacent "para-pharmacies" which are pretty much taken up by "natural remedies". There's nothing more medicinally powerful than toothpaste there.

Oh and those useless energy bracelets are on sale everywhere! - Mike
