Good on you, James

Bully for you for coming out! I only just found out about it - got a little bored at work and went from reading about Houdini, to reading about you on Wikipedia, to reading this post.

As a straight person, I of course cannot even begin to fathom the difficulty of any gay person, ESPECIALLY someone born back in the pre-Depression era, but I work thru my church and on FaceBook and elsewhere to drive home the point that we are all as we were made to be - gay, straight, bi, transgender (it has been said that the only true aberration is to be asexual), and we all deserve the same rights, freedoms, justice and equality in society and under the law.

That all being said - nothing's really different at all. You're the same Randi you ever were, those who admire and support you still hold you in esteem, those who would like to poke you in the snoot are no less antagonistic (except, perhaps for some of the gay ones, possibly).

We are what we are. Nothing supernatural about that. Just plain natural.

I registered here for the sole purpose of saying CONGRATULATIONS to James for having the courage to come out publicly.
I am gay also, and an atheist, a double "whammy" for my poor christian parents (now both deceased).

I also HATE the term "gay"! it conjurs some silly ideas. I act, look and behave exactly like any other man, only difference
is that I heart guys :)

I am also a member of Atheist Nexus and am looking for a good forum for gay atheists. Havent found one yet, so if anyone
can give me a suggestion, I would be greatful. :)

Oh, and hello everyone, this is my first post ;D - Psychobunny

Congratulations Mr Randi! Here another skeptic gay. Gays (women and men), we are everywhere. We work, we love and we live, like the other people. - lisugi

Who gives a shit.
And I say that in the best way possible.
Anyone who reacts to these news with anything else than “good for you” has serious issues.
It sucks that you had to wait so much to freely say this. High five, Mr. Randi.

Let me first tell you that I have not a clue how I ended up on your site because I was reading about my own industry - private planes! Nonetheless, I stumbled upon your post - personally, I don't think things happen by accident. Congratulations on being who you are and having the courage to announce it. I pray for you peace in your heart from this day forward and hope your courage rubs off on others and they find the strength to be who they are and free themselves from any 'secrets' they may have. Kudos to you!!!! - exquisitelady

@Tom Johnston
Well, gosh. They speak highly of you.
Seriously though, get over yourself. Your low opinion of Barney Frank and Rachel Maddows may be justified in your mind, but it is not shared by a lot of people. Taking a stick to James Randi because he mentions them as "good company" is just not acceptable. They are two of the most prominent gays in America, and have been showing the flag for civil rights and all the good causes (In Barney Frank's case even when he had to defend the freedom of speech of obnoxious idiots he detests), second openly gay member of the House of Representatives, first openly gay news anchor. I have no problem with you flaming prominent and celebrated people, but flaming James for mentioning their names is going too far. - Darwin Harmless

You call Barney Frank and Rachel Maddow “good company”???? Come on, James, you can do better than that. Barney is a man who’s intellectual dishonest has done incalculable harm to this country and Rachel Maddow is a bald-faced liar. Barney was the main player in the collapse of the home mortgage scandal and subsequent financial collapse and he has lied about it consistently. Rachel’s profound dishonesty makes journalists, in general ,look bad. Why in the world would you put yourself in a class with such scumbags? If you actually believe they are good company, my respect for your logic and judgment has just been deflated. I am very disappointed, to put it mildly. In fact, it tells me something about you that I find disturbing. Why would a man you seeks the truth associate himself with two people who seem to be the enemy of truth? There are many wonderful gay people who you could have chosen to associate yourself with. Why in the world would you choose those two? Until today, you were one of my heroes – a man whose judgment I greatly respected. - Tom Johnston

Barney was the main player in the collapse of the home mortgage market and the subsequent financial collapse and he has lied about it consistently. He is a detestable human being! He has done almost incalculable damage to our country. Rachel’s profound dishonesty makes journalists in general look bad. Why in the world would you put yourself in a class with such scumbags? They are far worse than the frauds you expose. If you actually believe they are good company, my respect for your logic and judgment has just been deflated. I am very disappointed, to put it mildly. In fact, it tells me something about you that I find disturbing, especially for a man who seeks truth. There are many wonderful gay people who you could have chosen to associate yourself with. Why in the world would you choose those two? Have you lost your mind? - Tom Johnston

I'm late to the party. Very late. But I am also quite new to scepticism and, as circumstances would have it, quite new to being openly atheist and bisexual(only last year for both). So it came as a joy to hear that, you, Randi, were also like me in another fashion. Every time I see a prominent gay person, it feels as though a pressure is being let off inside me, as I see our ranks grow I know we are not alone, and the burden lightens.

So, with every gram of my being, thank you for everything.

Sincerely,
~Kyle

Having first heard you on Long John so many years ago and following when I could on radio, TV, at SI, and JREF, I have to say that it neither occurred to me nor would it have made a scintilla of difference. I have always respected your integrity as a magician and skeptic.

Your "gayness" is a fact of life, like gravity.

I've thought you were gay for decades, Randi. I was worried you'd never come out because I thought you'd feel better if you did. I'm glad you're out. Good for you.

But you didn't come out as gay just because Geller came out as a fake, did you? Just kidding! - DougKrueger
