A lot of people seem to spend a lot of time worrying that society trying to maintain a minimum standard of living conditions for all citizens might lead to reductions in motivation & productivity. Although most people get up in the morning and do their jobs without immanent threat hunger & homelessness, it is believed by many Americans that without fear of loss of everything nothing would get done. Seems to me you made an assumption. My point was that prime evil said he believed people were "mostly good". The problem is that "good" is a very subjective word. Sure, the same guy who blatantly scams the welfare system probably would find this witch business rather gruesome.....does this make him a "good" person? Who's witch hunting now? Having been a social worker involved with people on SSI, SSDI and welfare recipients of all stripes, welfare fraud is not half as prevalent as some would have you believe. I have a feeling that these people are simply barbarians, and would be barbarians with or without religion - but religion can be a very handy hook on which to hang all sorts of evildoing. In 2004, Terrence Cotrell, age 8, was crushed by the weight of a pastor's body during an exorcism to "treat" his autism. In Oregon City, this year, Ava Worthington died at 15 months of bronchial pneumonia, and her uncle, Neal Beagley, died at 16 of a chronic obstruction in his urethra. In 1999, Oregon removed relgious belief of parents from the list of defenses to manslaughter. There was outreach to the church to make sure parents understood the change in law. Faith healing as a legally-permitted substitute for medical care is always presented in American reporting as a conflict between the state's interest in protecting children and parents' right to freedom of religion. I think there's an important first amendment freedom-of-religion issue that is ignored - children who die before growing up never get the chance to make their own choices about religious belief/practice. I think we should consider taking the Amish example, and withholding religious membership until adulthood. Yes, I know the world is full of good people, but in my opinion, they are far outnumbered by the Wal-Mart stampeders, the religious persecutors, the welfare abusers, the sexually deviant, the morally deficient and the list goes on. Ive read the bible many times, I do find a lot contained in the bible to be highly questionable as accurate. I've always abhored the use of christianity to further personal agendas, and bank accounts, in the name of lord, and the threatening statements that "your soul will burn in hell if you don't give me your money now."
