a small question about "welfare abusers"

I find it very interesting the amount of public discourse about welfare abuse - even after more than a decade after substantial reductions in welfare availability. A lot of people seem to spend a lot of time worrying that society trying to maintain a minimum standard of living conditions for all citizens might lead to reductions in motivation & productivity. Although most people get up in the morning and do their jobs without immanent threat hunger & homelessness, it is believed by many Americans that without fear of loss of everything nothing would get done.

And yet, rarely is there breathed a word about what inherited wealth does to motivation & productivity - not to mention a sense of entitlement and superiority. - Trish

Here's a story that'll hit closer to home about a mother and stepfather who murdered a baby while trying to perform an exorcism.

hmmm Raindoggy, just how do you know how prevalent I believe welfare fraud to be? Seems to me you made an assumption.

My point was that prime evil said he believed people were "mostly good". The problem is that "good" is a very subjective word. Sure, the same guy who blatantly scams the welfare system probably would find this witch business rather gruesome.....does this make him a "good" person?

I was simply providing some examples of people who while they may not approve of torturing and maiming children, may not be what you would call "good"....such as the people who trampled that poor wal-mart employee to death....real pillars of humanity ya' got there. - cwniles

Welfare abusers? Who's witch hunting now? Having been a social worker involved with people on SSI, SSDI and welfare recipients of all stripes, welfare fraud is not half as prevalent as some would have you believe.

As far as burning kids alive because they are a witch or your imaginary friend says so; If anyone thinks this is ok, I hope they will test their faith and go to god soon. - Raindoggy

Superstition and stupidity are found in many places other than religion, but it seems that lately religion is where the two most frequently join and create some real trouble. I have a feeling that these people are simply barbarians, and would be barbarians with or without religion - but religion can be a very handy hook on which to hang all sorts of evildoing. I don't think we can tar all religions with the same brush - nobody from my mother's Presbyterian church is out torturing and mutilating children - and I think it would be both unfair and inaccurate to lump them in with these crazies. - sfdyoung

People do the same sorts of cruel & stupid things to children in the name of religion in this country, too. In 2004, Terrence Cotrell, age 8, was crushed by the weight of a pastor's body during an exorcism to "treat" his autism. In Oregon City, this year, Ava Worthington died at 15 months of bronchial pneumonia, and her uncle, Neal Beagley, died at 16 of a chronic obstruction in his urethra. In 1999, Oregon removed relgious belief of parents from the list of defenses to manslaughter. There was outreach to the church to make sure parents understood the change in law.

Faith healing as a legally-permitted substitute for medical care is always presented in American reporting as a conflict between the state's interest in protecting children and parents' right to freedom of religion.

I think there's an important first amendment freedom-of-religion issue that is ignored - children who die before growing up never get the chance to make their own choices about religious belief/practice. I think we should consider taking the Amish example, and withholding religious membership until adulthood. We don't let parents vote their children's votes, and we no longer let parents indenture their kids in apprenticeships [like Ben Franklin escaped as a teen]. - Trish

primeevil said "I have to disagree with cwniles".

Congratulations primeevil, the world needs more naive optimists like you. Sadly, I am too old to be either naive or an optimist. I wish I had more faith in humanity but I don't. Yes, I know the world is full of good people, but in my opinion, they are far outnumbered by the Wal-Mart stampeders, the religious persecutors, the welfare abusers, the sexually deviant, the morally deficient and the list goes on.

Don't take this as an insult, it's not meant as one and for the recored, while you may disagree with me, I don't disagree with you. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it as I am to mine....and for the record, I hope you are right and I am wrong. - cwniles

It's been said before ' Religion poisons everything '.It does beg the question of how 'people' like this manage to avoid dying out from lack of offspring although I suppose children who are able to find 'witches' tend to survive .
While I find this subject to be among the most disgusting I've encountered I do not attribute it to people "for the most part".

The world is full of wonderful, kind, and decent people that would kill or die before allowing such evil to happen to any child let alone their own.

Most people are good and decent, we just don't notice them. - PrimevilKneivel

Nigeria has had troubles like this since early 1960's. In 67 there was a cicil war and it's been a mess ever since. Nigeria has some of the highest corruption rates than any other country in the world. Its run by military and religious nuts like these... - Adavidson

I was raised under the United Methodist teachings, and my mother is a retired UMC Pastor. Ive read the bible many times, I do find a lot contained in the bible to be highly questionable as accurate. I've always abhored the use of christianity to further personal agendas, and bank accounts, in the name of lord, and the threatening statements that "your soul will burn in hell if you don't give me your money now."

This is so atrocious, one has to wonder where the human rights groups are why they are not actively, and aggressively involved in stopping this inhumane treatment of children. - AMFCook
