A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal--Oscar Wilde

Otara:

You are 100% correct that "people often conflate sincerity and credibility." That includes judges. Here is a relevant sentence from an Orange County California court decision in favor of Rapid Prompting in a school plan.

"Stromberg’s testimony that he did not substitute his answers for those of Student was persuasive because it appeared sincere and was not contradicted."

http://tinyurl.com/2f5qz6j

If you are thinking that actual relevant evidence would make a difference--such as there being zero scientific studies showing that Rapid Prompting is an effective method, or that its big brother, Facilitated Communication, is the most discredited intervention in developmental disabilities--you would be wrong. Seeming sincere is enough.

Wish I could say I was shocked. Unfortunately people often conflate sincerity and credibility, so they sometimes get to operate longer than a simple scam artist might. - Otara

This serves as a valuable remindeer that the United Nations does not exactly maintain a spotless record when it comes to the discernment of scientific tastes. - ThatSkepticGuy

True Believerism

Otara:

How about this for true believerism? The licensed psychologist and former Eastern Michigan Special Education professor who recommended FC to the family, Sandra McClennen, and who testified for the prosecution in the case (I was on the defense), still believes in FC and even offers free training sessions in it. I attended one of those sessions to see what FC training would look like after having your clients arrested for doing what you recommended. It looks the same.

Unfortunately the rape accusations suggest 'true believers', as a scam artist would probably steer clear of police involvement where possible. - Otara

Mr. Bilk'em makes me think of Johnny Cash singing "Dang 'em, dang 'em - ought to take a rope n' hang 'em".

When did the FC crowd start charging into the "hypnotic regression" scam of accusing people of rape etc?

film - "Autism Is a World"

Would love to read James Randi's review of "Autism Is a World", the 2004 short subject documentary that is credited as being written by Sue Rubin. It's Oscar-nominated propaganda for FC that's been shown, in full, on CNN International - and to my knowledge, no one has challenged it. - Lina Baker

Like countless other rational people, I am appalled at the giving of such a large - and undeserved - award to an institution that purports to espouse education. In this case it is funding that supports a fraud who perpetuates ignorance and false hope, a shameful blot on the record of an otherwise reputable university. - daveg703
