Help Me! Or I'll Kill You! PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Jeff Wagg

frustrationThose who follow me on Twitter or Facebook know that I received an inflammatory e-mail this morning. I wasn’t the only one to receive it – it was sent to a number of TV stations and public skeptics. And of course, this isn’t unusual. If you blog and take up a controversial position (yes, skepticism is sadly controversial), you’ll receive this delightful mail as well.

It was quite an offensive piece that threatened the entire population of the United States with slaughter and included a picture of “Goatse,” a well-known photo that I urge you not to Google. (When you do it anyway, just remember that I did warn you.) As the e-mail is offensive and even disturbing, I’ve put a photo of it here. You needn’t look at it to get my point.

What at first glance looks like a threat of violence from a mad man is actually something much more upsetting. It’s a cry for help that none of us are able to answer.

This particular gentleman is suffering. He probably has schizophrenia, though only a qualified medical professional should make that diagnosis. He knows the truth, and yet he can’t get anyone in the world to see what’s so very plain to him. His system of logic and reason is actually working – it’s just that his brain is feeding him false information.

Imagine if you suddenly had the ability to float. You can do this at will – just close your eyes, and you’ll feel your feet leave the floor. You show your family, and they think you’re playing a joke. Frustrated, you go outside and show the public, and they call you crazy. You videotape yourself floating, and while you can plainly see yourself floating on the tape, the media won’t even talk to you.

And then you come to the JREF, and you’re told that your abilities aren’t paranormal (as we did).

Add to that a constant buzzing or ringing in the ear, and you can begin to understand this man’s frustration. He knows, without a doubt, that he has an ability (his “ability” is quite different from floating), and he can demonstrate it any time, anywhere. Yet there’s this vast conspiracy that’s telling him it’s not real, and the sonic torture continues. For years.

At first, you might be reasonable, as this man appeared, but then, on occasion, you might lose your temper and lash out. After all, there’s an attack going on. His actions are self-defense.

So what are we to do? This man wants and needs our help, and yet we have none to offer. Mental health services are for the wealthy and well-insured. Those who can’t afford those services rely on family or end up on the streets. I don’t know this man’s situation, but I do know that he’s liable to get “help” in the form of incarceration if he keeps making threats.

I wish there was something more society had to offer. For now, all I have is worthless pity.

"a danger to self or to others"
written by rdmiller3, August 16, 2010
Why do you say that nothing can be done?

If this person is making specific threats against specific persons, then this should be reported to the authorities just like one would do if they were earnest threats from a sane person.

A person can be arrested by local police if they are apparently "a danger to self or to others". The police can then commit them involuntarily to a mental hospital for evaluation. So it may be that the best thing you can do for him is to file an official complaint with his local police (or whoever has jurisdiction) and try to get him arrested. At least then he might end up seeing a psychological professional whether he wants to or not.

Sadly, I believe he's already been in the legal system, and is now free once again.

I've had an aunt in and out of the system (granted, years ago), and she'd routinely just wander out of the facility that she was in. If she takes her meds, she's functional, but she often wouldn't take them.

About 15 years ago, she was 'used' by a scam artist to bilk my grandmother out of almost all her money (while my grandmother was in the hospital, recovering from a stroke), and then she and the guy (who, apparently, she thought she was married to, but that was just one of delusions) disappeared. Private detectives have not been able to locate her or the scam artist or the money. To this day, we don't know if she's dead or alive.

And remember, this is back when there actually WAS money for such services. Nowadays, it's a lot worse.

This may help Jeff Wagg, in that he won't receive threatening emails anymore, but IMO involuntary commitment to an institution is no guarantee that there would be funding to actually help the sender of the email. Just one consequence of our "free market" health care system.

Without knowing the specifics, i have to say that it seems more like someone trying to screw with people on an epic scale versus a legitimately insane person. I mean including a picture of goatse? Seriously that doesn't seem insane to me that seems like someone sat down and thought " i want to make the most, out there, offensive e-mail. " people can and do pretend to be wackjobs online on a pretty constant basis, it offers an easy way to get people not to report possibly illegal actions. A lot of people will say " well, they are insane, i am just going to let it go.", not to mention it is just a general cookie cutter schtick for trolls.

All and all i would say if you know enough that you know ( in the sense that you have hard facts to back up this information.) this person is legitimately insane and harmful, you probably know where he lives, so call the authorities. If your just kind of guessing based on his e-mail/net actions, i think you have stumbled into exactly what he wants, giving him fairly large scale attention.

I honestly find that while we are excellent at debunking frauds of a paranormal nature, our nature to take ourselves and our work very seriously ( with good cause. ) sometimes blinds us to people who are just having a laugh, and we sometimes treat people who are not being serious as serious. ( I am no exception to this rule, i have replied at length to things that warrant nothing more than a hand wave. ) and unfortunately, in a lot of these cases that is exactly what the people want.

Just some food for thought.

Incarceration Seems Reasonable to Me

Yeah, and? I don't see the problem with this. People who threaten society should be locked up to keep society safe. He's more likely to get mental health care in jail than as an uninsured individual in our deplorable health care system.

How gently written by you, Jeff. It truly shows your genuinely kind and caring nature, and you even managed to make me change my feelings about this man and his letter entirely in that short text that you wrote, from something disrespectful to something more decent. Thank you.

I applaud your ability to see the persons suffering, but would say dont forget that there can be a real risk as well with these situations.

Incarceration does have its place in an imperfect system, it beats getting locked up after they've killed or hurt someone.

My brother is a paranoid schizophrenic with delusions. He recently attacked my parents and put both of them in the hospital. He is now in jail and is refusing to take the medicines that would help his mental conditions. Jeff, from the way this subject acts, he has a similar condition to my brother, but with just audible delusions. (My brother has the full range of delusions, aural, visual, etc.)

Sadly, under the current system in the United States, there is very little that can be done for individuals who suffer from this condition. Until they prove they are a danger, the legal system can do very little about them. Even after they have proven their danger, their civil rights trump most treatment methods. Generally, they will be a threat to the people they have targeted for as long as they live.

Fortunately this condition is rare. We, as human beings, need to develop a system or method that gives these people the treatment they need (forcefully if required) and keeps the people they have targeted safety.

Is he Australian?
written by kdv, August 16, 2010
I wonder if he's here in Australia because the post office name Caloundra rang a bell, so I looked it up. Sure enough, it's in Australia, Queensland to be exact.

Also note that he refers to the US govt as "your" rather than "the" or "our".

If he's in Australia, the preceding comments re the US health and legal systems don't apply. There are taxpayer-funded mental health services here, and police routinely place people under their care if appropriate. While everybody agrees the available resources are insufficient, somebody potentially violent against others would get priority. ( And let's face it, mass killers often do give warnings of this nature. ) The current debate ( with an election just around the corner, of course, which focuses the minds of politicians ) is the lack of resources for people likely to harm themselves.

So, if somebody here were to complain to the police, something good may well come of it, for him and everybody else.

I didn't receive the email, and I don't live in Queensland, otherwise I'd put in the complaint myself.

I know who this guy is
written by acl01, August 16, 2010
The writing style, the claims to be Adam etc. are the clues. He should be well known to Aus Skeptics since he threatened to put poison in Dick Smith foods a few years ago and earned a court appearance and probably a trip to the funhouse for his troubles. A quick google will reveal more details including previous JREF coverage on March 15 2002.

As much as it pains me to admit .... this nut job is Australian and yes he lives in Caloundra, Queensland. He posts in alt.atheism and several other newsgroups like alt.conspiracy under the name of 'Hercules'. He is quite mad, and has already been locked up at least once. Apparently the Queensland police know about him and have him under 'surveillance'. He believes, amongst other bizarre things, that the CIA is remotely torturing him with some kind of Satellite sound device and that he is the Biblical Adam. He posts regularly on YouTube under the name of AlfoilBeanie ......... there are plenty of people in Australia who want him locked up, if he keeps making threats like this hopefully he will be.

Goatse
written by Matt_D, August 17, 2010
Goatse is a naked man stretching his anus open to a diameter of about four or five inches.

It's not the worst gross-out picture on the internet, but it's not really something you need to see.

After a while, it becomes boring to see this sort of online ranting. Yes, it is stupid, and a death threat may need to be investigated by the proper authorities. However, the use of Goatse suggests that the person may be desperate for attention rather than mentally ill. Had this e-mail arrived in my inbox, it would have been binned without further worrying. smilies/wink.gif

No he's definitely mentally ill. His posting history on Usenet as well as past run-ins with Australian Skeptics is easily discoverable. The only thing likely to put a stop to some of his sometimes disturbing fantasies would be an extended stay in a mental hospital where his treatment and medication can be supervised.

Suppose that James Tilly Matthews had access to the Internet...
written by ianmacm, August 18, 2010
There are some similarities here with the case of James Tilly Matthews ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Tilly_Matthews ) who is considered to be the first reliably documented case of paranoid schizophrenia. Matthews was intelligent and educated, but he developed delusions of persecution that were impossible to shake. He also became a nuisance to leading public figures of the day, leading to his incarceration in the Bethlem (Bedlam) psychiatric hospital. Had Matthews been able to access the Internet, there is little doubt that he would have been using it to air his grievances. JREF has a friend in Australia known to do this on a regular basis, and he is well known to the authorities there. Boring nonsense laced with profanities is one thing, but death threats are another. Here is a case where something similar happened in March 2010, after a YouTube video contained a death threat against the US politician Eric Cantor: http://ponyurl.com/d7mafe . The IP address of the uploader was traced and he was arrested. Will JREF's friend in Australia be arrested over this incident? Watch this space. Incidentally, the YouTube video threatening Eric Cantor is here: http://ponyurl.com/93a88v . The person involved is obviously not playing off a full deck, and the similarity with JREF's Australian friend is remarkable.

The thing is, he says sonic torture. His location could be a factor. They discovered in a small town a few years back. I remember women in the town where all suffering from head aches and ringing in the ears. They discovered it was from a close by submarine station. Its also possible that type of abuse on a human can cause long term damage. What this person needs is an MRI before anything. I'm sure you heard of the mosquito ring tone? Not everything that doesn't appear before your eyes is a conspiracy theory of the paranoid. I wasn't there - but I can pretty much bet someone did not wake up one morning and scream "eureka!" Only humans under 25 years old can hear 22000 frequency sound. Also with the sonic feeling it could be blood pressure. Simple - good old fashioned high blood pressure putting pressure on his brain, or something like that. Not that I care, but here people die of heart attacks and other things because the cops are to fast to write them off as insane and lock them away for 72 hours wile they die. I agree he needs medical attention, you can locate his area by back tracking the email headers. I once interviewed a street Gypsy who could read energy of a person like a news paper. She believed she could do that because when she was a child she had a fever that left her with a thin layer of water on her brain. Any way, the word sonic being used seems to suggest some type of pressure. He will likely be rushed to the hospital soon. But if you want to entertain your selves with some of what could be the exterior causes - here you go - enjoy.
This one is out dated
http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Bases.html
Well! Carp!I can't find one single up to date web anything on any sonic testing. Maybe all that was just in my mind. I did find this really cool toy I really want. You gotta see this.

Here this toy would be great, all the neighbors I didn't like would be committed to mental institutions just for living next door to me. But sadly to say. looks like most of my knowledge is too old for even the internet.
