Ben Goldacre on the Squabbles Around Homeopathy from TAM 6 PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Michael Blanford
Friday, 27 August 2010 11:55

In an effort to make our extensive video library available online free of charge, The James Randi Educational Foundation is posting high quality digital video lectures and sessions from previous Amaz!ng Meetings and other events on randi.org. Check back often to see the latest video content.

Science writer and psychiatrist Ben Goldacre takes a historical look at homeopathy and its critics while reviewing the often misrepresented results of over 200 scientific trials. His talk gives an, at times, humorous explanation of what homeopathy is and why its principles are implausible and even “childish”.

I was intrigued by the statement that we don't really know how anesthetics work. I thought they were generally understood. Any medical folks care to comment?

Wish the sound had been a little better but good stuff. Zoroaster It was probably a good example to a medical person but I, like you, thought we knew what made them work.
Overall, he gave a good talk. I Liked his part about "Bad research is unethical".

Well, I'm not a Medical Professional (*but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express...), but looking at wikipedia it does seem that he is accurate.

It has always been believed that general anaesthetics exert their effects (analgesia, amnesia, immobility) by modulating the activity of membrane proteins in the neuronal membrane. However, the exact location and mechanism of this action are still largely unknown although much research has been done in this area. There are a number of outdated and modern theories that explain anaesthetic action.

So it seems that we know they work effectively, but the exact mechanism on why they work still is being worked on.
