Colbert On Geller PDF Print E-mail

Apparently, Uri Geller is sticking by his decision that no matter what people say about him, it's all good publicity, just as I'm sure that mentalist Kreskin probably celebrates the existence stephen_colbertof the movie The Great Buck Howard, even though it's a devastating and hilarious exposé of him and his methods. Geller delights in quoting Oscar Wilde: "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about." Take a look here at the latest major comment on the professional spoon-bender, this time by Stephen Colbert, and decide whether Geller will celebrate this event or summon his lawyers – one of his very favorite pastimes – to bleat and moan once again. Colbert being Colbert, he could not possibly have passed up an opportunity to show just how ridiculous the latest from Geller really is. Even Geller’s devoted teenyboppers might gag at this claim.

Of course, we're still waiting for Geller to announce that he has succeeded in bringing back one of the cameras that the lunar astronauts left on our satellite 39 years ago; an intention he announced long ago, but which has so far not been achieved, for some strange reason.

The words Scotia and Scot are derivations on Scone (rhymes with spoon) which is a village in Perth where Kenneth MacAlpin removed the Capital and the remains of St. Columba after he united the Gaelic and Pictish tribes into a loose confederation known as Alba to avoid confusion with the Albanians in Easter Europe the Kingdom of Alba was Anglicized as the "greater Scotian dominion" or "Scotia" for short, referring to her capital. The story of the Egyptian Princess dates to around 1300 when the Bishop of St. Andrews was appealing to the Pope for the release of John Bailiol. Where that story came from is unknown but the point the Bishop was trying to make was that Scots were a unique ethnic group that shouldn't be subject to England, Norway and France ... In truth the Gaels were descended from the Gauls and the Picts were of mixed Welsh and Scandinavian extraction ....

Mr. Randi, what exactly is your beef with Kreskin? My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that he does not claim psychic powers, and that his stage magic is all derived from psychological tricks, reading bodily cues, etc. What has he done that has drawn your criticism?

usually Colbert annoys the heck out of but credit is due where credit is earned that was pretty funny. Gellar isn't even good at the mumbo Jumbo stuff. How did he prosper for so long on his weak grifting skills?

Considering the claim is that he's going to find king Tut's penis, that might not have been the best metaphor...

"Beef"? It sounds like you're suggesting Mr. Randi has a "hardon" for Kreskin. After all, they are both known as "The Amazing." The difference is someone made a movie based on Kreskin and Kreskin still gets invited on talk shows. Also, Kreskin went the FOR-profit route to earn his living and Randi went the NON-profit route.

You're wrong. He claimed psychic powers for decades. Sure, during the last few years, he's admitted he's a con, but that's still decades of swindling people out of money.

Mr. Randi, what exactly is your beef with Kreskin?

Pending Randi's answer I guess the point is that Kreskin is a rather bad mentalist who has to resort to parlour tricks (or worse: excuses) to accomplish something a good mentalist does using nothing but psychology and an awful lot of practice.

Hahaha; Colbert had me crying. He sure knows how to make Uri Geller's spoon bending look like the silly farce that it is. Not to mention how he just makes shit up like the story about the egyptian princess in Scotland.

Do you even know what a parlor trick IS? Kreskin doesn't do them, so great argument! Might want to look that up. Kreskin is a competent mentalist who has had more network tv exposure prior to and since the demise of Carson than the Malevolent Santa Claus. THAT's the point. Pure jealousy. Not because Kreskin is "better" but because he has gotten more airtime and someone made a movie based on him.

As noted by the first poster the idea of an ancient link between Egypt and Scotland predates Geller's (somewhat silly) claim of Egyptian treasure being buried on Lamb island. The idea that Geller hopes to find King Tut's penis there seems to be the comedic invention of Stephen Colbert. It's not entirely clear but Randi's statement that, "... how ridiculous the latest from Geller really is. Even Geller’s devoted teenyboppers might gag at this claim." gives the impression that he believes the claim originated with Geller himself. As for Geller involving his lawyers, it's highly unlikely. He will probably see it as the joke it was.

written by halohms, September 04, 2010
Thanks for the movie information. I never heard of it before and just watched it. A lot a famous actors were in it and it was actually pretty good. I had seen Kreskin on TV many times and didn't realize he was that strange.
