“Psychic” Nikki Not “Psychologically Ready” To Prove She Can Actually Do Anything (Besides Talk, That Is) PDF Print E-mail

Since ABC-TV’s Nightline paranormal mini-series “Beyond Belief” aired an episode on August 17 focusing on psychics and, among other things, the JREF’s Million Dollar Challenge, there’s been a nice burst of media coverage.  The story of the MDC has been picked up by some mainstream media, including multiple stories now in Canada, particularly via CBC News.

In a story posted by the CBC News on August 31, a local Toronto “psychic” named “Psychic Nikki,” (from here on in, maybe I should ask people to call me Magician Swiss) who was approached for comment, said:

"I would say yes, I would take [the] challenge because I have enough faith in my own abilities if I was available," Toronto-based “psychic” Nikki told CBC News. "I am the real thing so I don't have to worry about this stuff."

She also went on “The Dean Blundell” Toronto morning radio talk show, on which she’s a weekly regular, where she and the rest of the morning Eh-List zoo gang made fun of Randi’s name and offered other devastating critiques of our challenge. But since then (surprise, surprise!), there’s been no sign of “Psychic” Nikki applying for the challenge. Randi publicly challenged her to put her mouth where our money is, in this story posted September 6.

“Psychic” Nikki claimed she wasn’t ducking us, saying, "I'm not refusing to take his test at all. I still need some information on it.” Well, hey, “Psychic” Nikki, you don’t’ have to be psychic to find the info! We have now twice offered to provide her information directly and to ask us questions.

Yet just three days later – Friday, September 9th – she was back on the same radio show again, this time leaving grooves in the road like Wile E. Coyote slamming into reverse before crashing into a mountain. Apparently, “Psychic” Nikki now says she doesn't want to take the test, especially now, because she isn't “psychologically ready” for it and “might do it next year.” She also continues to whine that she doesn’t know anything about the test, even though the Challenge has its own public web page, and the fact that you get about half a million Google hits if you type in “Randi Million Dollar Challenge.” So much for psychic powers – but we’ve still got a million ready and waiting for ya, “Psychic” Nikki. That’s a personal promise from Magician Swiss. Come and get it!

“Psychic” Nikki has also failed to follow through with her promise to contact us, so by every measure she is backing down and running scared. We didn’t have to be psychic to predict any of it!

She is psychic - she has foreseen that she will fail the test spectacularly.

Jamy,

I don't think she is using the moniker "Psychic" as a title, but instead as a descriptor, as in: "Handsome Joe", "Sweet Connie", etc. Perhaps instead of "Magician Swiss" you should consider "Rational Swiss"?

I think it's perfectly fine she put her psychic test off if she is not “psychologically ready” for it, and “might do it next year.”

I just hope she exhibits the same restraint with her clients, and doesn't practice her psychic abilities on anyone until she is “psychologically ready”, for them, and for the test.

Ever noticed that whenever James Randi or members of the JREF provide rational, sensible arguments against these criminals, they always come back with lame excuses ("I don't know how to contact them"), or ignorant, childish insults, like making fun of Randi's name smilies/angry.gif . Seriously, no matter how many times we ask these "psychics" why they won't accept the challenge, we will never get a good reason out of them. For example, when I asked Maureen Hancock (a fraudulent "psychic" criminal up here in New England) why she wouldn't accept the challenge, all she said was "I'm not in it for the money". Come on Maureen, think of all those starving children and homeless people out there, think of all the charities that could use that money. Even if she were a real psychic, she would still be a sick, cold person for this reason.

OK, I'll feed the troll, or shoot fish in a barrel - one or the other.

1. If Ms. Hancock gave all the money to charity, there would be no tax. Just as much money would end up with starving children as if Mr. Randi donated it.
2. Ms. Hancock shouldn't expend any effort towards charity because there exists someone else out there who could do so more effectively? By this reasoning, nobody except Bill Gates should donate to charity, because someone else can do so more effectively.
3. James Randi believes he is doing something useful with that million dollars, including helping poor people not to waste their limited resources on useless products and services. He is not, therefore, about to donate it to starving children. (In fact, he probably can't - I expect the money belongs to some trust with limits on how it may be spent.) If, as seems likely, you, Nikki and Maureen Hancock do not believe this money is being put to good use, you have a way to change this, for much less effort than it would take to earn $1M by normal means - provided you can demonstrate a supernatural ability.
3a. Putting it another way: "Come on Mr. Randi, think of all those starving children and homeless people out there, think of all the charities that could use that money." JREF is a charity, probably Mr. Randi's favourite one, and it is using that money.

No need for the test actually. Her squirming, diversions excuses are there for all to see. She evidently is not confident in her 'abilities'.

Why two articles about this, so similar and so close together?

One is a Swift blog article, while the other is a JREF "News". To the best of my knowledge, they are technically intended for different audiences, but all articles on the JREF site are aggregated on the home page. If you select "Seift Blog" from the "Digital Media" menu, then you will only see this article (and others designated as "Swift Blog" entries) listed in the results.

Here is a refresher in the rules of conduct here on this blog:

1) No Spam. It will be deleted from the blog and the account will be banned.

2) Please maintain civility. No direct profane name-calling. I understand that arguments get heated and I’ll allow occasional leeway but please don’t make a habit of it. If I have to warn you more than a couple times, I will be forced to ban the account.

3) Any threats of physical violence will lead to immediate, permanent banning, no exceptions.

Please refer to #2 on the list. This is your first warning.

You all have done an admirable job of keeping things civil here. Please don't let the atmosphere degrade again.

Thank you.

Lots of hot feelings about this issue. I think the JREF has to walk a very narrow line with cases like this. Too agressive and they come off as jerks. Not agressive enough, and the message that the challenge exists to be a challenge gets lost.

I don't understand why JREF even bothers to put "Psychic" in quotes and attach it to "Nikki". That is to say, I understand but I disagree. I think there are other words more appropriate or failing the insult, simply omitting the word "Psychic" would be more appropriate.

I understand it to be the noun form of psychic rather than the verb. She is 'a psychic' rather than she is psychic. This is a legitimate title since it refers to the persons profession rather than their ability.I suppose it is the same with magicians. Nobody reallydoes magic. Of course, magicians generally are not the unethical lowfifes that psychics are.
