Weird Offerings at Community College PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Harriet Hall
Periodically the mail brings us a pamphlet from our local community college listing their continuing education offerings. Along with the usual computer, drawing, cooking, and photography classes they include some less conventional subjects. I’m not even going to comment; I’m just going to list a few of them and let you draw your own conclusions.

The Awakening of Higher Consciousness and the New Earth
– as predicted in the Mayan calendar, the year 2012 will be an opportunity for a quantum leap in consciousness, so why is the world so full of war, hate, panic, poverty? Is this the end of the world? What is ascension? Who are the Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow children? Why is the animal kingdom behaving differently?

Illustrated Discovery Journal – teaches you how to cut out pictures you like and make a collage as a way of revealing just about anything you want to know about yourself. It accelerates the unfolding of the authentic journey through pure intuition and feeling.

Developing Your Psychic Awareness with the Tarot – uses all forms of exercises to develop your intuition and psychic ability using the TAROT.

Medicine Wheel: Creating a Sacred Circle – an ancient way of calling forth the healing energies of nature and relating better to the Earth Mother and all of creation.

The New Kids – Indigo/Crystal/Rainbow – since the 1970s children are being born who are increasingly more sensitive, aware, and psychic. They are the next step in our human evolution. They see auras and angels. They may be slow to learn to speak, picky eaters, and may thought abnormal by parents and others who don’t understand their gifts.

Reiki - learn how to pass a large, warm current of vital life force from your hands into the person being treated. Reiki consistently and potently serves physical problems (broken bones, pain, swelling, headache), serious illness (cancer, heart condition, diabetes, AIDS), and emotional/spiritual problems (grief, broken heart, confusion or depression).

The Lightbody Activation – a simple process performed with specially programmed crystals that raise your body’s vibration with Fifth Dimensional energy to create a positive shift in consciousness. Your chakras are activated, light is spun into the layers of your aura, and prana is brought into the cells of your body. Bring to class 3 crystals: amethyst or clear quartz, rose quartz, and a green crystal. Learn how to perform a LBA on others (in a single 4 hour class) to help them relax, heal, and shift their consciousness towards a healthier way of being.

Healing with River Stones and Crystals
– Learn how to cleanse and program crystals and river stones. Apply stones with the correct color and energy to corresponding chakras to heal, ease pain, and shift energy. Bring a pendulum.

Nearly any community college will have this sort of woo on tap, typically in the non-credit/non-accredited courses taught by Joe-off-the-street.
I'd love to take the "Healing with river stones and crystals" class and show up with a pendulum from a large grandfather clock... smilies/grin.gif

By the way: the "New Kids" described in one class as "slow learners, picky eaters and abnormal" are more commonly known as "Drug Babies" and it's no miracle that they started arriving immediately after Woodstock.

My favorite is the illustrated discovery journal-- really, I can get college credit for making collages? I don't know about pure intuition, but it helps me pick out sweaters!

And hey, if that doesn't work, they make great ground cover for your shrub garden. (Put a layer of landscaping fabric under the rocks and crystals, to keep the weed energy low.)

The educational institution in question is Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington; all course offerings were taken from one brochure. I didn't even list all the unconventional courses in that one brochure: for instance, I left out Ho'oponopono, the ancient Hawaiian technique of love, gratitude and forgiveness. I didn't name the college because it's not unique; I would guess most colleges offer such courses. To clarify, these are "continuing education" courses, not for credit, and many of them consist of only one session lasting 3-4 hours for a cost of U.

The "point" of the entry? I just put the information out there so readers could find their own points. Not everyone is aware that colleges are offering this type of thing. My husband, for one, was flabbergasted and said if I hadn't shown him the actual brochure he would have suspected me of making it all up.

Censorship?
written by JeffWagg, November 20, 2008
Cuddly Joe, what censorship are you talking about? There are no unpublished posts in this thread. There is one that is lowly rated. I'm going to turn off the software's "hide lowly rated" comments feature, in case that's what you're referring to.

Justification/Rationale
written by surfgeorge, November 20, 2008
Twenty-something years ago I went to several such community college adult education classes in my community just to check them out. I was amazed both at the content (holy woo!), and the fact that I never once heard a question that demonstrated the slightest bit of critical thinking. Hugging trees to feel their "energy" (in a "therapeutic touch" class)? No problem! Because I had taught philosophy classes there, I knew some of the administrators and asked them about how they determine that the material is evaluated prior to approving the course. It wasn't. Their response to my assertion that some of the classes being taught were essentially "fraudulent" due to there being no evidence for the claims being made? "That's not our job. We are here to provide classes that the people of the community want." Uh huh. So if people in the community (I think you needed 12 people for a class to register) want classes in bank robbing, pedophilia, income tax evasion, etc.? "Those are illegal." Uh huh. And the instructors recruiting clients and taking money from them for non-existent treatment is only "fraud". Go figure.

government intervention
written by Bill Henry, November 20, 2008
anyone taking these courses should have to register with the government, and they should not be allowed to vote or have children. It would help speed up Darwin's work (yes i am aware that its a frivilous remark that implies a misunderstanding of evolution)

Wouldn't this be cool:

Inter-class Skeptical Analysis- In this we audit several ridiculous classes offered at our institution, one at a time, and then return to our class and discuss the failings of logic as they present in each respective class. Unlike those classes, this one is actually good for an actual philosophy credit.
