Dara O'Briain Says It All PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Jeff Wagg

We can post article after article, lecture, jump up an down and point to all the evidence in the world. But sometimes... all that's needed is a pithy comedian to set the record straight.

Dara O'Briain is such a man, and these six minutes encompass the mission of the JREF and other skeptical organizations succinctly and with hillarity.

The language is a bit rougher than you'd find on American broadcast television, so if you're offended by that type of thing, you might not enjoy this. For the rest of us, it's a treat. Direct link is found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIaV8swc-fo

@jeff: "hilarity"

(delete this after fix)

EDITED BY JEFFWAGG: I'm actually not going to fix that typo for a vexing, stupid reason - it will delete the video. Technical problem, but yes, that spelling error is mine.

Genius......
written by Greg1138, August 01, 2009
Dara's (Sorry - Mr O'Briain's) a bit of a hero of mine - not least because of his appearances on QI in the UK....This is a superb routine...great fun but nigh-on transcends his entire peer-group by pulling this off ALMOST without telling one single joke. Very few comedians can pull that off these days.

Big Time Skeptic....Long time lurker....First time poster....be gentle.

Please?

Great fan of Dara O'Brian. He hosts a satircal news quiz in the UK, called 'Mock the Week', which is hilarious, Catch it on the sky channel, 'Dave' if you can.

If we're into ridiculing religion, and I wholeheartedly agree, it's such an enjoyable thing to do, take a look at YouTuble for some of my personal favourites:

- OneStampCollector: about 20 cartoons that allows the bible to ridicule itself, by quoting directly from it, that passages that the religious allow themselves to ignore
- 43alley: an atheist reads the bible - similar to the above, with slightly different style. With this sort of stuff, it just amazes me that anyone can read this nonsense, and see it as moral code, or anything other than a man-made book of fiction
- misterdeity: 'sketch show' videos that parody god - great stuff
- anything with Christopher Hitchens - I thoroughly enjoy watching Hitchens demolish the pathetically weak arguments of his religious opponents
- Creation Science by Roy Zimmerman - catchy tune about the attempts of the deluded to insert 'intelligent design' into US classrooms

Hours of fun with these! Would love to hear from anyone who has other similar YouTube subscriptions on this subject. I really do think that, as Dawkins has advocated, one of the most effective strategies against religion is to ridicule it, since as any good psychiatrist will tell you, debating reality with the deluded is a futile exercise, as we've seen on recent threads here at the JREF.

It's not religious, but there's a great video on YouTube on Homeopathy Accident & Emergency from 'That Mitchell and Webb Look' that I think most people here will enjoy.

(I would have posted links for all of the above, but this blog doesn't seem to like links for some reason, and my posts are often bounced when embedded links are included, but a quick search on YouTube should bring them up).

"Jesus, homeopaths get on my nerves, with the old 'Well, science doesn't know everything'! Well, science *knows* it doesn't know everything, otherwise it would stop. . . . Just because science doesn't know everything doesn't mean that you can fill in the gaps with whatever fairy tale most appeals to you."

"I'm sorry, 'herbal medicine', 'Oh, herbal medicine's been around for thousands of years!' Indeed it has, and then we tested it all, and the stuff that worked became 'medicine', and the rest of it is just a nice bowl of soup and some potpourri, so knock yourselves out.

"Chinese medicine, oh, Chinese medicine! 'But there are billions of Chinese, Chinese medicine must be working.' Here's the skinny on Chinese medicine. A hundred years ago the average life expectancy in China was 30. The life expectancy in China at the moment is 73. And it's not feckin' tiger penis that turned it around for the Chinese."

Another great one here from the blogger, 'Dwindling in Unbelief':

http://dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/2009/07/chasers-war-on-everything-help-me-put.html

in which The Chasers ask Americans to help them in carrying out some of the passages they conveniently choose to overlook in the bible. Great stuff! What, you won't help him stone to death his son for cursing his father? But your book commands you do so!!

In fact, I very much recommend Dwindling in Unbelief's blog:

http://dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-many-has-god-killed-revised_04.html

He has catalogued the number of killings by god in the old testament. He documents a total of 2,301,417 across 55 bloody episodes in the bible. Over 2 million deaths committed by god, collated and documented from direct quotes in the bible!! Add to that, the innumerable deaths committed since by those who claim to be acting upon their particular interpretation of the mandate of this hideous book, and you have one of the most evil pieces of fiction man has ever created.

Reason is an insufficiently sharp tool to deal with these people; ridicule is the only way.

I promise I'm not deliberating looking for these, just picking them up from the daily RSS feeds I have, but I thought this one was also appropriate for this thread: Billy Connolly (Scottish comedian of great note for our US friends) on Catholicism: "forget the why, and concentrate on the how"!

Along with this stat, I read somewhere that, in contrast, Satan was only responsible for about 10 deaths in the Bible.

Ahhh - the yin and the yang of it all!
