Remembering Uri PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Jeff Wagg

Remember Uri Geller? It seems that new generations have no idea who he was, or what a "mystifier" is. Actually, I don't think anyone knows what a "mystifier" is...

So while Uri's star may be setting below the horizon, it's actually important to remember him because his story teaches us lessons. One man can fool millions into believing he has supernatural powers, unless he's tested under controlled conditions. And when a man refuses to be tested under proper conditions, well, that can tell us something too.

In order to help put Uri into perspective, the site www.zem.demon.co.uk has created a bibliography of Uri Geller articles. This exaustive list can serve as a research tool for anyone wanting to research the Geller "phenomenon," which in the end turned out to be little more than opportunistic showmanship. Visit the site with today's eyes and see what the public of the 1970's missed.

Uri Geller - a bibliography
written by Steve Knight, September 11, 2009

A note for visitors to Uri Geller - a bibliography.

The site does not exist to either promote or refute Geller's psychic claims. Both positive and negative material and opinion can be found on or via the site. This includes comments of my own wherein I take issue with some of what's been written by Geller's supporters and detractors. If JREF readers disagree with some of the comments I'd welcome their opinions via email.

I still have repressed memories of the 1970s - muslim terrorists hijacking planes and murdering people, preferring to murder US citizens. Terrorists hijacking cruise ships. Uri Geller making ridiculous claims to have supernatural powers and receiving a lot of attention even though he wasn't even half as interesting as the local circus' side show. The discovery of the Antarctic "Ozone hole" and subsequent, somewhat embarrassed, verification by researchers at NASA who realized that the extraordinarily low ozone amounts as measured from satellite were real and not glitches to be ignored. Farman and his team may currently be praised for their astounding discovery, but I remember those days and many people claimed that the BAS team couldn't be right and probably didn't know how to use their instruments. So for me there are numerous issues in the 1970s which still persist; I'm glad many people don't even know who Uri Geller is - with any luck they won't pay much attention to the latest supernatural scamsters like John Edward, Sylvia Browne, and so on - or is that too much to hope for?

Oh good.... 'the new Uri Geller'. Is this a Netherlands' TV channel site? WTH are they thinking over there? Char, Uri, a haven for con men (con people)?

Jeff, we've plenty of newcomers here in the U.S., Chip Coffey, Chris Moon, the Paranormal Research Society ect. All claiming contact with dead people and demons and people are buying the BS. And they seem to be smarter than Geller as they don't bend spoons and keys.

Actually the seasonally low ozone over the Antarctic was discovered in the mid 1950s, montored and found to be natural based on the angle of incidence of TSI and the like. Sunlight both creates and destroys ozone. The "hole" (not really a hole) was re-discovered in the 70s and made a big deal of, even though it hasn't appreciably changed since the mid 1950s. As far as we know it's always been there and always will.

seeing your comment about the hole in the ozone set off my bullshit detector, and a quick wiki search turned up this

G.M.B. Dobson (Exploring the Atmosphere, 2nd Edition, Oxford, 196smilies/cool.gif mentioned that when springtime ozone levels over Halley Bay were first measured, he was surprised to find that they were ~320 DU, about 150 DU below spring levels, ~450 DU, in the Arctic. These, however, were the pre-ozone hole normal climatological values. What Dobson describes is essentially the baseline from which the ozone hole is measured: actual ozone hole values are in the 150–100 DU range.

The discrepancy between the Arctic and Antarctic noted by Dobson was primarily a matter of timing: during the Arctic spring ozone levels rose smoothly, peaking in April, whereas in the Antarctic they stayed approximately constant during early spring, rising abruptly in November when the polar vortex broke down.

The behavior seen in the Antarctic ozone hole is completely different. Instead of staying constant, early springtime ozone levels suddenly drop from their already low winter values, by as much as 50%, and normal values are not reached again until December.[54]

The entire ozone depletion article is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion

So, which part is bullshit?

Here's a plot of Antarctic ozone: http://junkscience.com/Ozone/plot9552.gif

An apparent step change in the mid 1980s took place, certainly not to a gradual increase in the use of CFCs.

And a plot from Mauna Loa: http://junkscience.com/Ozone/plot35910.gif

Both plots are from Mauna Loa. So how could CFCs used in temperate latitudes seriously affect ozone only in the Antarctic?

The Halley Bay experiments you mentioned took place in 1956, not 1965, and certainly nothing to do with the 70s.

Here's an excerpt from junkscience.com:

n a paper titled "Forty Years' Research on Atmospheric Ozone at Oxford: A History" (Applied Optics, March 196smilies/cool.gif, Dobson described an ozone monitoring program that began at Halley Bay in 1956.

When the data began to arrive, "the values in September and October 1956 were about 150 [Dobson] units lower than expected. ... In November the ozone values suddenly jumped up to those expected. ... It was not until a year later, when the same type of annual variation was repeated, that we realized that the early results were indeed correct and that Halley Bay showed a most interesting difference from other parts of the world."

Although South Polar temperatures do not appear to have been quite as low in 1957-58 as they have in recent years (a critical factor in ozone destruction) Rigaud and Leroy [Annales Geophysicae (November, 1990)] reported atmospheric ozone levels as low as 110 DU observed at the French Antarctic Observatory at Dumont d'Urville [opposite side of the South Pole from Halley Bay] in the spring of 1958. The South Polar Vortex, where ozone destruction is greatest, was reportedly centred over Dumont d'Urville that year, which suggests any observed differences may be well within the bounds of normal variability.

Someone pass this article on....

You know i find no one even remembers this man, except for the hardest of the hardcore woo-flingers out there. I mean one has to be rocking a solid 10/10 on the woo-o-meter, but there are some out there who still wave the Geller flag, which astounds me.

What is sad is that Geller seems to be parodying his image now. His remarks when getting the award from the Magicians society seem like something Andy Kaufman, or David Brockie would say, not something that someone who has legitimate powers, and is legitimately angry about people trying to crap on them would say.

But the long and short of it is, the man sucks. But thankfully he is sucking less and less in the public eye. And really the only time we have to deal with him even being mentioned is when youtube users in tinfoil hats have run out of ideas.

If i had a time machine i would love to see john edwards et al in 20 years when no one can remember their name or their schtick. I think it will be interesting to see how different woo-icons take obscurity.

Michael Jackson's Death and Uri
written by Steve Packard, September 12, 2009
The death of Michael Jackson has been a big story this summer, of course, and it seems Uri Geller is all over it. Uri Claims to have been a close friend of Jackson. I don't know if he actually was or anything, but he apparently knew the guy to some degree or another.

Anyway, not surprisingly, Geller has been using this to get any attention he can - doing interviews with whatever news organization will interview him and talking about his closeness to Michael Jackson and how he had tried to help Michael Jackson with his problems and how deeply he is effected etc etc etc.

[OT] @Steel Rat: You're just so wrong about the ozone - it's hard to imagine how you could be any more wrong. For a long time the "ozone hole" has only been measured in the Antarctic, but about 12 years or so ago people have reported a similar phenomenon in the Arctic - it is nothing compared to what happens down South though. If you go to the World Meteorological Organization's website you can find numerous factual reports about the ozone hole including information on why the phenomenon is not anywhere near as dramatic in the Arctic. Any measurements at Mauna Loa are irrelevant; it's too far from the poles and the climactic conditions are never right for an "ozone hole". The CFCs don't stay where they are emitted; they are transported globally and we can see their absorption features throughout our atmosphere. Some people were surprised at the speed of transport across the hemispheres and some ideas about global transport of gases had to be revised. The ozone hole formation requires a number of chemicals at the right band of altitudes, some aerosols to enhance reaction rates, and very cold temperatures so that somewhat unstable chemicals can build up. When the sun lights up the stratosphere toward the end of the Antarctic winter, it triggers chemical reactions which result in various cycles which destroy ozone. At this time the polar vortex prevents dissipation of the reacting chemicals; little ozone comes in to replace what is destroyed. When the polar vortex breaks up and air from lower latitudes starts to mix in, the ozone hole eventually dissipates. During that time, large parcels of stratospheric air containing very little ozone may drift across some southern regions such as parts of South America, New Zealand, and Australia. If you take time to look at Farman's original paper, it is obvious that your claim that the hole was always there and just another natural phenomenon is incorrect.

The ozone
written by Sadhatter, September 13, 2009
Everyone knows that the hole in the ozone layer was caused by hair metal bands over use of hair products during the mid 80's. And the real danger was that it caused the ice to thaw, thereby releasing gwar from being trapped in ice. Now we are all pretty much doomed to a gory death at their hands.

Seriously my post is about as on topic as any other about the ozone layer in this article

Sorry Madscientist, but most of what you're saying is supposition. Not enough is known about it to say anything with that level of certainty.

Those plots show that the "hole" isn't a hole, and has always been there since we started measuring. Those are from NOAA, so argue with them if you're not happy about it.

The banning of CFCs in the US and Canada has done absolutely nothing to reduce the "hole". So how are CFCs responsible?

Uri Geller and the Reality... What we saw, what we seeing... (written with my very poor english)
written by alexthemagician, September 13, 2009
Uri Geller" can`t change the world, but the world will change him...

Decades with bending spoons...

Uri used the to many spoons abnormally (he bent the first one accidentally, as he claimed), absolutely not in the a proper, traditional way (to eat or something like that)...

He got media power because of bending spoons with his hands...(???!!!)

Uri Geller used the media in the same way (or the media used, using him, or his media power using other medias...?) damaging, mixing, disturbing, provoke reality, rational thinking, rationality, truth, playing with the public opinion...

Uri exposed, lost that absurd "silly" joke game, he changed tactic, "he is searching for his successor" in new TV shows worldwide...(?!)

Uri Geller used and still using the magicians world, involving many magicians, mentalists worldwide to continue his "game" by breaking many laws, many trends, he is already exposed several times, but he is not gave up, he has still the strange, absurd belief to be a legal entertainer, a mega star, which is so far from entertainment, because he only created conflicts, tried to build up paradoxes...

To many questions, to many confuses can`t be even an entertainment (on his levels also not)...

*(We was asking him last year in Hungary (and his helpers, or team) openly to seat around the table and talk, discuss, make an open talk, forum at the TV channels when he did his "The Successor" scandalous (pseudo) show in Hungary last year, we sent many many messages openly simply they refused, rejected these asks, which "mentality", attitude is abnormal -even in politics- to reject any kind of dialogs, they really really exposed and failed in Hungary because of their crazy clown TV program, they automatically week by week lost their viewers, their young audience too...)

The media laws also must force him to not to reject always the any kind of dialogs to clear the many problems, which is would be the really healthy solution for Uri too, the media must give a place and time for that great chances to fix the Uri Geller effects, problems etc...

Uri Geller (and the team) simply not allowed to hold back the informations abut his upcoming media events etc...

Uri Geller minimum must accept, respect reality, he is not allowed to legally confuse, provoke the public opinion worldwide...

"I've stopped caring about skeptics, but if they libel or defame me they will end up in court."

"I'm a religious man. I am Jewish but I believe in all religions. I believe in God and see him as an old man with a big white beard and pray to him every day for a few minutes."

"So, I am independently well-off and don't have to do anything, but I still do. I write books, lecture around the world, work with scientists and governments."

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/u/uri_geller.html

If "Uri Geller" knows the to many mistakes (small gates), problems of our systems, laws worldwide, he must to help to correct those with his political power..., as soon as possible..., especially in the politically economically instabil regions, countries...

Randi was ready to support him many many years ago, to turn and driving him to the real entertainment ways, but Mr. Geller was not listen to it...

So, Mr. Uri Geller: please do not breake the laws, and do not teach and call the world to follow You in that useless activity... Reality is not a joke or a game to play with it...

The main law, that nobody allowed to do that... The other very big and really strong law is:the laws of life and nature naturally overwriting the written laws too...

And finally:You can`t escape nowhere from Yourself as nobody else...

Please be good, and don`t try to be a God..., It`s never good..., for none of us...

We need to be Magiacal...

Mind bending logic
written by rabbit, September 18, 2009
I love this comment from one "psychic research" report on metal bending from 1976:

One particular type of specimen has been found most suitable with child subjects, namely, the common paperclip, usually made of nickel-plated steel. Since these are relatively easy to bend physically, they are likely to be also relatively easy to bend paranormally.

What a massive leap of logic that is, given that the researcher hadn't a clue what the fundamental mechanisms or properties of "psychic bending" might be. Of course a skeptic would add "they are also likely to be easy to bend through deceptive means."
