I have received a report from N. Innaiah, Chairman of CFI India, and M. Subba Rao, concerning the condition of our colleague Basava Premanand, the revered and justly famous Indian rationalist with whom I have had the honor to be associated for many decades. Premanand is the publisher of "The Indian Skeptic," a journal devoted to exposing the tricks of such frauds as Sai Baba, who is worshiped as a living god by countless naifs around the world. The excellent documentary film "Guru Busters" by British film maker Robert Eagle shows Premanand and his crew zealously exposing supposedly supernatural stunts such as levitation, flesh-piercing and live burials.

Premanand is now hospitalized with a terminal condition, his friends are caring for him, but he's not lost any of his zeal or determination to maintain his rational philosophy. The report says, concerning a hospital visit:

He was quite drowsy and not responding to queries until I told him that there was a rumor that he has started believing in god and supernatural powers. He opened his eyes and said, "Who says that?" and that was the clear indication that, however ill we may continue to hold onto our convictions! He said, "That is nonsense!" So, I told him that we should say so to the world, and he agreed. The statement reproduced herein was put for his signature. But, his hands were weak and hence we had to take his thumb impression, too. The declaration has been witnessed by Dr. Maya Prabhu, his sister, and Suneera, one of his admirers who has been taking care of him.

Our movement is not based on individuals but, those who are in the forefront are ever in the public eye and particularly in the sights of those who want to attack us. They would like to spread rumors that eminent rationalists have changed on their death bed, have gone back to god and spiritualism, etc. We do not want to give any occasion for such rumors and hence, though it may sound morbid, I had this task. I would like that to be done to me when I am on my death bed so that all can know that we hold on to our convictions whatever the circumstances may be.

This short report is a bulletin on the health of one of those who have inspired a whole generation and have done significant work to build up the movement. As and when news is received I shall make more such communications.

TO WHOMSOEVER IT MAY CONCERN

Declaration of attitude and temperament

I, B. Premanand son of the late Sri Basava Prabhu, 80 years of age, resident of Chettipalayam Road, Podanur,  sound of mind though suffering from physical complications caused by metastases in many organs caused by carcinoma of the stomach, herein solemnly wish to place on record the following:

1. I have been closely associated with the rationalist movement from 1975 onwards and have been a rationalist of full conviction since then and continue to be so.

2. It is common for the purveyors of superstitions and such anti-rational forces to start spreading rumors about rationalists turning to god and other supernatural forces at the end of their lives and becoming devotees of gods and god men of various types.

3. It is also claimed that at times of crises that we staunch rationalists through the major part of our lives, turn to spiritualism and religion.

4. I wish to clarify that as on today the twentieth of September, 2009, I remain a staunch rationalist and wish to place on record the following:

a. I continue to be a rationalist of full conviction.

b. I do not believe in any supernatural power. All the powers that we encounter are in the realm of nature and nothing exists beyond that.

c. I do not believe in the existence of the soul or rebirth.

d. I have not turned to any religion, god, or any sort of spiritual pursuits.

e. When I pass away I shall be leaving only my body which is to be donated to a medical college and no spirit or soul to cause problems for the living.

I want to convey to all that the struggle against the exploitation by god men and so-called supernatural forces, is a long and hard one but the ultimate victory will be ours.

My very survival has been a challenge to astrologers and their so-called "science" of astrology, as they had all predicted that I would die soon after birth and refused to cast a horoscope for me.

I wish to convey to my colleagues of the rationalist movement to continue the work that I have been doing with renewed vigor and that will be the best of tributes for me.

The declaration is signed and thumb-printed by this noble warrior...  What could I possibly add?

One of the most disgusting aspects of believers in the supernatural i find is their pattern of capitalizing on the death of anyone. Whether it is one of their own or that of a skeptic.

Spinning tears into gold is an ignorant practice that only cheapens the memory of the person that passed, for the sake of money. If this is not proof of the malignant nature of these supposed fountains of wisdom, i don't know what is.

We have published this story with pictures and the testimony of the persons who took the statement from Premanand, here: http://nirmukta.com/2009/09/22...oimbatore/

Narendra Nayak, the writer of the article and Premanand's successor has already been carrying on with his work by travelling to the corners of the country and performing demonstrations, Premanand style. For links to these demonstrations, search on the website the article appears in.

Although it's sad indeed to hear that he is in such an awful condition, it's always good to hear from people who refuse to give up the fight against ignorance. Without people like B. Premanand who stand up to call out bullshit, there is little hope of making progress in society - just look at how slow technical development was during the era dominated by the catholic church and its brand of ignorance.

It's a prescient document to make. And sad that it's necessary. smilies/sad.gif

I remember the Sai Baba thing where Premenand filed suit because Baba was magically producing Rolex watches. The suit pointed out he was: 1. Importing gold without a license, and 2. Violating Rolex's trademarks and whatnot without their permission.

It was immediately tossed with the argument basically that gods can do whatever they want (godmen aside). Which is valid, if stupid, as an argument, what with no way to bring a god to heel in the justice system.

Premanand's comment about astrologers predicting his death soon after birth reminded me of a family woo story. My mother was born in Ceylon, her father being stationed there as a civil engineer in the British Admiralty. The local administrators refused to record her birth date, instead insisting on stating it as the following day. This was, apparently, for a very sensible reason: only boys could be born on that day (March 30, 1941, in case anyone has some insight into whatever inviolable rule of the universe she violated).

That said, it is unfortunate in many ways that such a document is needed.

Oh boy, You guys are so intent on insisting that there was not a creation team that created every genetic, dot and eco-system as if you had been stoned for most of your lives and never opened any eye or proper book to gain a tad bit of the lessons you missed.
Its a sad thing, and of course you aficionadoes of no creation science team that created every genetic and eco -system everywhere in the super-universes have no clue that without hyperdimension, you do not exist, you are just a little bug having a physicality experience here, isnt that just terrible!!
You folks that get dream feed or your penis raises up in the early am to wake you are experiencing those "Super-natural" To you only, little dots that are protocoling the shit out of you and you cannot do a damn thing about it without "Knowledge" and shutting yourselves off works right into their hands,ha,ha.
So continue on in your stupor, they make a heck of alot of money off you, Guaranteed.

Sarcasm?

PhD--that's supposed to sound like gibberish, right? The problem with satirizing the woo-woo crowd is that they will invariably say sillier things than we can come up with.

Sarcasm, It only sounds like gibberish if you cannot read,I absolutely never speak or write a mis -truth,and your reply may be"Who the h... can support that",well since it is "I" the man who can give out degrees in hyperdimensional physics without blinking an eye,if you have qualified, and am also the ass.... grid scientist on the planet who unfortunately is also that consortium man with science responsibility for the system. Try asking a valid question ,or what might qualify as a valid question and you just might get an answer. I have protocol over security clearence for my kind of people, but still only release what does not effect my system. Ta Ta.

Phd.Hyper D: Just curious. Do you release what does not bring about your system (effect), or do you release what does not influence your system (affect)?

PS: When my "penis raises up in the early am to wake" me, I never realized that a full bladder was super-natural.

Oh,My, Mastering the arts should be foremost in your mind,Arts Myth, or is that mythos. Whether you only get a hard penis or you get the double alarm system of your wake up call, you still have your process from HD.
You must have really pis--d someone off to get that two alarm fire. And your affect/effect gibberish is not very artsy,or am I missing something in this paradigm,as I am an old as.hole.,used to the old ,old proper english and protocoling with an old,old crowd.
To me you characters are the woo,woo crowd. Have you considered counseling? I think counsel of the proper type might help, and there is the juxtaposition of you woo, woo'ers thinking you have everything figured out.Ya might try shock treatments, but they will just jump off and watch you get the he.. shocked out of you,so,maybe some of those drugs you woo, woo's love to trip to.

This was lifted verbatim from my write up about the visit of Somu and I to Abirami hospital, Coimbatore on the 20th September to see Premanand. Inniaha has made it look as it were he who had visited Premanand. The write up has been published in nirmukta.com on the next day with photographs, that is 21st September itself. Ajita, the administrator of the same web site has already clarified that. I think the whole issue needs to be clarified and things be made clear as to who met Premanand and took the declaration.
