Hilarious But Sad PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by James Randi

Sometimes it's difficult to believe just how misinformed some folks can be.  Now, I'm only a very amateur scientist, and I speak with little authority - though I've been personally enlightened by such giants as Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Isaac Asimov, and Richard Dawkins. Prepare yourself for "Dr. Charlene Werner", a "developmental optometrist who combines light therapy, vision training, and homeopathy." Wow! An intellectual giant, right? No, she's  someone who has almost zero knowledge of reality, leans on "vibrations" and Einstein, and constantly asks "Okay?" - a sure sign of the woo-woo speaker - all through an astonishing, rambling, display of ignorance that can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/2l36o7 in all its glory.  It runs for more than 8 minutes, but I challenge you to watch the whole thing...

Oh, I almost forgot: Okay?

That bowling ball...
written by JeffWagg, October 28, 2009
The bowling ball that's she's pretending to hold? It has a "canceled out" mass of 1.59486 × 10^55 kg (an estimate). Of course, that's a small number compared with the dilution ratios of many homeopathic remedies.

I first saw this on PZ Myer's Blog, I could stand about 2 minutes and 15 seconds, before I had to stop watching.
I found it horribly ignorant, but strangely compelling brr. (FYI: Strangely compelling is also how I feel about certain actors in p0rn)

What I'd like to know is where this recording took place? Was it in front of a paid audience, and how much was she paid for this if any. Oh yes, and (if it's a lot) could Lore please turn off my morality subroutine?

After viewing the video I wonder how much members of the audience got paid to listen to her drive.

Oh wait, of course: Quick update to Where this was given. Bozeman Montana of course that explains it.

The Vulcans must have had an old copy of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy" and were stopping by Earth to jump up and down in front of some yokel, who no one's ever going to believe, while wearing funny antenna and making Bleep Bleep noises. - Saw this video, and said hey how about Bozeman Montana. Warp Drive had nothing to do with it.

Dr. Charlene Werner
written by JonK, October 28, 2009
This is an amazing video! I really don't think I've ever heard as much nonsense compressed into under nine minutes. The scary thing is that Dr. Charlene Werner is on the medical staff at the "Healing the Eye" Vision and Therapy Center in Phoenix, AZ. She actually sees patients with real vision problems. While in practice at several clinics in Texas, where she was licensed, she reportedly worked with a school psychologist, using a "light therapy machine." She is listed as a member of the Optometrists Network. I've not been able to learn where she got her education. It does not appear on her website nor on the sires for the places she's practiced.

I don't think it is particularly hard to watch this woman. I mean, it was FUNNY. She definitely has a future in stand-up comedy. I've seen Mitchell & Webb on homeopathy, Dara O'Brian on homeopathy and Randi on homeopathy and all of you guys are funny but this woman has you beat. By a country mile. I nearly fell of my chair laughing the first time I heard this and it was still funny on the second and third viewings.

Misc observations:

1. The guy at the beginning said it was a "homeopathic lecture". If so, shouldn't it have been a couple of seconds of speech followed by 30 hours or so of silence?

2. We are an "infinitesimal amount of mass?" Wow, I wish I could believe that each time I step on a weighing scale!

3. If we are all either animal, plant or mineral, this woman is almost certainly mineral. She's too dumb to be animal or plant.

4. How the heck does this woman still have patients? I'd run screaming if I heard my doctor talk like that.

5. After multiple viewings, I feel the need to return my brain to its "previous better state" - which is why I shall shortly be consuming liberal quantities of alcohol :-)

State of education in USA
written by Kuroyume, October 28, 2009
I realize that this is obvious to anyone with a third-grade education but if you take the term 'mass' to be infinitesimal (i.e. zero), the result wouldn't be E = C^2, it would be E = 0*(C^2) = 0 (which is correct: no mass, no energy conversion). For anyone who doesn't have a third-grade education, any term multiplied by zero equals zero. You just can't remove a term from an equation. The only way to do that would be to divide both sides by M, E/M = M*(C^2)/M which becomes E/M = 1*C^2. Mizzzz Charlene Werner gets no 'Doctor' from me! smilies/smiley.gif

It was impossible to watch the entire video (I'm not feeling so hot today and it just nauseated me more). Made it about 2:42. How many woo names were dropped (Einstein, Hawking, ...)?

That made my brain hurt. The science that was slightly correct was explained incorrectly, and I almost cried at the rest. Why would anyone with any education beyond grade school buy this stuff? I can bet that she didn't do very well in physics, chemistry, or mathematics.

"Has everybody had Chemistry like, um, in school, way back when?"

Emphasis on "way back when." I suspect she's less interested in whether her audience has studied any chemistry than establishing that those who might have accidentally taken a course did so sufficiently long ago. This way they won't notice that her presentation contains none.

Regarding her reaction to her hypothetical neighbor's dog (by lobbing a bomb at her neighbor's house), I shudder to imagine how she responds to critics.

It's sad for various reasons, one being that she seems convinced that she at least understands what she's talking about. It's clear that she doesn't have the slightest grasp of anything, but she comes across as though she thinks she sees the flow of 'logic' rather than just parroting someone else's bullshit.

It makes me think that if she'd had a proper education, she might have made a useful member of society.

Posted a link to this on facebook and here's a response from my cousin's woo woo ex-wife:

This is basically the Placebo Effect. Which as you can read in the link that follows is quite effective. We are only as healthy as we think we are based on the pictures and ideas we hold of ourselves in our subconscious mind. Science agrees and so does most religions. We do manifest issues with ourselves due to trauma, fear, anger, depression etc... Read More.. and as well we can reverse things by replacing those negative behaviors with positive ones. Agreed that the lady in the video is a horrible representative of talking about anything.... [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo

As what usually happens in facebook square-offs this conversation enter futile territory extremely quickly, but I've probably bored you enough.

Okay, I think she is very close to like a major epiphany. So like we have a house that was blown up by a terrorist, okay, and we know how to make a bomb which blows up houses right? So we can make a dilute energy bomb which restores houses to the way they were before, okay?

You cynics who could not watch the entire video have no idea what I'm on about here so it will not work on your houses. That is what Mercutio meant when he said "A plague on both your houses". It all fits together, Einstein, Hawking, and now Shakespeare.

ShowerComic - just because we marry our sisters, what are you trying to insinuate about Bozeman?
written by Paul Erickson, October 31, 2009
Being that Bozeman is a university town, we get more than our share of these types of nut-jobs along with morons who will believe in anything they are told. Case in point – we had another fruitcake give a seminar back in December of 2007 who claimed his enzymes cured Magic Johnson's AIDS. That was all I could take (besides the fact that he stated his "secret formula" - the one that he discovered on a hot sidewalk in Phoenix - vibrated at a frequency that was immeasurable - whatever that means).
