A couple of weeks ago, I wrote -- here on Swift as well as at my own blog -- about the Iraqi military employing useless magic wands to search for explosives at checkpoints, and about the inevitable deadly results. This was based on an article in the New York Times, and the word has now spread far and wide.

Skeptic, physician, and journalist Ben Goldacre wrote about it in The Guardian, and Graeme Wood did so as well for The Atlantic. The story was huge on tech and skeptic sites too, like Slashdot, MetaFilter, Gizmodo, and Bruce Hood's Supersense blog. It made a brief appearance on TV in this segment on the Rachel Maddow Show.

And she mentioned Hal Bidlack, friend of the JREF and TAM MC, by name!

I have heard some rumors -- as yet unsubstantiated, but encouraging -- that members of the U.S. government have taken an interest in the story, too. What this all shows is that we need to stand up to nonsense and call it out, letting others know when they believe in garbage -- especially when that garbage is fatal. If enough of us do it, then maybe, just maybe, we can get something done about it.

Remember:

It's true for reality, too.

The emperor is indeed not wearing any clothes, and unless we say something, will continue walking around naked.

I think they were inspired by Harry Potter for this product.

There is nothing wrong with the emperor being nude. What is wrong is the removal of his brain with the clothes. When one cannot differentiate reality from fantasy, the real problem becomes evident. Way too many people spend their entire lives believing in the supernatural and having "faith" in the supernatural, with the indoctrination starting in their youth and having it forced down their throats. It is much easier to accept faith based thinking than to learn to think and be rational. If you can believe in all of the religeous dogma, why should you believe in the laws of physics and chemistry. To do so requires thinking.

I believe it was Frank Zappa who said "They aren't getting any smarter out there". I hope he was wrong.

The thing is, the laws of physics don't need you to believe in them.

I don't recall if funds from the U.S. (us, the taxpayers) was mentioned as a source of the money for these bogus devices. If so, then we should be outraged even more.

However, if the U.S. was not involved, either in the form of money or (more importantly) lives, then I really do not care what the Iraqies do about bomb detection. I am at that point that I want ignorance to carry on where the results do not impact me, my family or my country. Let these people suffer the consequences of their beliefs and ignorance. Some day in the future, after the losses have pilled up too high to ignore, the Iraq government (and anyone else buying into this fraud) will wake up and "smell the roses" and change their ways.

We, the U.S., cannot assume responsibility for all the ignorance in the world.

DKrap - Ignorance doesn't live in a vacuum
written by Kajabla61, November 16, 2009
We skeptics are not responsible for the ignorance in the world but we ignore it at our own peril.

If we don't work to rid the world of ignorance it may just land on our doorstep in the form of a law telling us what to believe or, worse yet, a nuclear warhead.

We must care and act. Ignorance does not just stick to the people wearing proudly on their sleeves.
