Sales of “Boobquake” T-shirts Support Real Quake Relief and the JREF PDF Print E-mail

Boobquake t

“Boobquake” is the clever idea of blogger Jen McCreight of Blag Hag. It was born after hearing the claim of an Iranian cleric that “women and girls who don't dress appropriately increase promiscuity in society, when promiscuity spreads, earthquakes increase."

McCreight proposed that April 26th would be declared “Boobquake” and suggested that women wear cleavage-exposing tops in order to test the claim. Surely, if the cleric was correct, the combined supernatural power of all of this immodesty would result in a powerful earthquake.

“Boobquake” is more than just an experiment. By purchasing related t-shirts, you can support international earthquake relief, as well as educational programs focused on the dangers of pseudoscience and the supernatural. 100% of the profits generated by t-shirt sales will be donated to the James Randi Educational Foundation and the Red Cross.

Visit Blag Hag to learn more about “Boobquake 2010” or purchase your commemorative t-shirt and support the work of JREF and the Red Cross here.

A search of the Internet with the quoted phrase finds articles on CNN and a great number of other sources.

A search of the Internet on the phrase "artificial earthquakes" finds sources for insinuations by Iranian media that earthquakes are caused by Jews, Israel, and the United States.

Such a technology, if it existed, would be likely to hurt the party that employed it more than their targets. It doesn't surprise me that the concept appeals mainly to cultures in which suicide bombing is considered "understandable".

Would anyone walking down the street get the idea that the shirt is promoting the skepticism of God causing earthquakes? I would more likely assume that the wearer had just returned from spring break.

DrMatt, I don't think the quote was referring to artificial earthquakes. I believe it was more to the stupid idea that God is punishing promiscuity.

The article references the source, which was a video on YouTube showing Substitute Friday Prayer Leader Hojatoleslam Kazim Sadeghi making that statement (I presume in Farsi.)

I'm surprised that the skeptical community hasn't made more of an effort to point out the basic problems with the whole idea. First of all, if there had been a major earthquake on that day, you can be sure that he would have pointed out the causal [sic] relationship. In fact, there is an earthquake somewhere on earth just about every day. Moreover, the number of women who wear (by that critic's standards) overly revealing clothing must number in the hundreds of millions at least. Adding a few thousand isn't likely to make any difference, unless they do it every day for long enough for any conclusions about changes (or lack thereof) in earthquake frequency resulting from the very small change in the number of promiscuously dressed women to be statistically significant. Note that even this argument would not have worked against the cleric's arguments had there been a major earthquake -- he would have pointed out that the effect is not expected to be linear, and that even one additional woman revealing too much skin could very well be the trigger of a major event, akin to a phase change, as described in the rather appropriately named mathematical model known as "catastrophe theory."
