George Alan Rekers Debunks Himself, Kind Of PDF Print E-mail
Swift
Written by Penn Bullock & Brandon K. Thorp
Tuesday, 04 May 2010 19:19

If the anti-gay religious right had a resident intellectual, it would be George Alan Rekers. He’s a kind of anti-Anita Bryant — bookish, quiet, loathe to hog a spotlight, working indefatigably behind the scenes to provide at least the approximation of an intellectual basis for a religiously-inspired dislike of homosexuals. He does this through academic papers by the hundred, books, and lectures around the world. (His preferred speaking subject: “Teen Sex.”)

With James Dobson, Rekers co-founded the Family Research Council in 1983. He is an adoptive father and frequent foster-parent, who testified as an expert witness against gay adoption in Arkansas and Florida. And perhaps most interestingly, at least for the purposes of Swift, he is a board-member of NARTH, an organization devoted to curing gays of their gayness — a pursuit generally regarded by professionals as pseudo-scientific, and which often involves such practices as the "laying on of hands."

For this reason and many more, we were delighted to be present last month at Miami Int‘l Airport, hot-pink camera in hand, when Rekers returned from a 10-day European vacation with a male prostitute.

To read the rest of that story, we invite you to visit its right and proper home on the web, The Miami New Times. (Also, doing a Google search for mentions of “George Alan Rekers” over the last 24 hours will lead you to some pretty entertaining responses, the funniest of which are probably PZ Myers’ mini-essay at Pharyngula and the comments at New York Magazine.) Unfortunately, journalism being what it is, we were not given sufficient space in that news organ to bring up this (purely speculative) point:

If NARTH’s de-gaying treatment works so well, how is it that George Alan Rekers, of all people, should come to this ugly little impasse? (Rekers’ answer — that he didn’t know about the lad’s line of work, and needed someone to help him carry his luggage — is not really worth responding to, though we do give the notion a fairly thorough savaging here.) And if the man cannot muster the intestinal fortitude to own up to his proclivities, take Jesus by the hand, and NARTH himself into a frenzy of other-sex attraction, then what does it say about his faith in the treatment he advocates?

It is both wonderful and inconvenient that sexual attraction is still only vaguely understood by the scientific community — “wonderful” because breaking attraction into its component parts sounds like a real romance-killer, and “inconvenient” because ignorance makes a wonderful vacuum for frightened people to fill with half-truth and superstition. Already we know that our usual taxonomy of sexual orientation — “gay,” “straight,” “bi” — is shorthand at best, primitive and reductive, and more a product of convenience than of nature. Yet NARTH and its cousins, such as Exodus International, treat nature’s messy reality as though it were simple. They not only claim to know what makes a person attracted to a particular kind of person/place/thing, but also how to transmute those attractions into something else. Rekers, with his scholar’s language, retiring disposition, forests of papers, and prestigious posts (he once drew his paycheck from Harvard), has done much to contribute to their delusion of mastery. Now, he may have a part in undoing it.

If this story develops further, we'll follow it at New Times. Stay tuned.

It happens almost like clockwork, doesn't it? Some anti-gay right-winger gets caught with his pants down -- sometimes literally -- and turns out to be that which he professes to despise.

I understand that a certain amount of hypocrisy is inevitable for anyone who takes a moral stand on any subject, whether for religious reasons or not. Most of us cannot live up to our ideals in one way or another, but that shouldn't keep us from representing them as best we can. But this kind of thing I just don't understand. It's not the attenuated hypocrisy of a fallible human being. It's a thoroughgoing false front. A gay man who would rather not be gay might keep the facade up for a few years, but behind that he MUST know its all a lie. How could someone in that position take such a public stand on the issue?

Yes Virginia, there is hypocrisy in the world...
written by Alencon, May 04, 2010
That hypocrisy exists shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone over the age of 12. What's pathetic is the number of people this asshole has hurt with his hypocrisy.

Another example of sacrificing honor and truth at the altar of the almighty dollar.

I'm sure he was just "ministering" to the poor lad. smilies/wink.gif

I have spent much time as a mental health professional and as a Christian minister helping and lovingly caring for people identifying themselves as “gay.” My hero is Jesus Christ who loves even the culturally despised people, including sexual sinners and prostitutes. Like Jesus Christ, I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them.
. . .
Like John the Baptist and Jesus, I have a loving Christian ministry to homosexuals and prostitutes in which I share the Good News of Jesus Christ with them (see I Corinthians 6:8-11).

I'm sure that "Lucien" will confirm all of this. And not just because he's been paid a truck full of money to confirm it!

I would have thought he'd have tried to claim he was trying to degayify him with the latest therapy or somesuch.

Wonder how he got caught, sounds like some kind of tipoff was involved.

He was conducting legitimate research.

No, wait, he was trying to help the poor guy.

No, wait, he didn't even realize the guy was a gay prostitute. He was simply a-tryin' to get his baggage toted. (Hmm, get his baggage toted?)

OK, that was my best defense for the gay Christian man who hates gays.

You know, it would be much easier for all of these male anti-gay advocates to cover up their true preferences if they'd just have sex with each other, instead of all of these male prostitutes and the like.

Unless... NAW! They couldn't be doing that at their anti-gay conferences already... could they? smilies/wink.gif

This is why I insist the United States is not ready for changing DADT.
The USA is a nation of intollerant wackos. Changing the laws will not
change the country and picking the military as a battlefield for gay
rights will backfire.

I think changing marrage laws in Utah would be a safer first step.

@Jefoid,
Yes, that WAS quite an exaggeration, but I understand Bill Thompsons frustration with the relative backwardness of the religious right's attitude towards gays.
He's just blowing off steam. A blog for skeptics is probably not the place to make emotional assertions, however...I get your point. smilies/wink.gif

I gave up a long time ago being shocked by this type of thing. In fact, the more gay hatred someone spews, the more assured I am that they are what they despise. I just don't understand these people. What is wrong with live and let live?

enough nasty talk. No need to escalate this. Believe me I know how easy it is to get sucked into an "internecine" (my new word, I learned from Brandon) web battle and it is so not worth it.

It is just amazing to me that all these right wing Christians as well as holier than thou Catholic Priests are so vile in their hypocrisy.

It's one thing if you are in the closet due to personal shame but it is entirely another thing when your life mission is to condemn those who are comfortable in their gay life style. Whatever your sexuality as long as it is between two consenting adults . . . it's none of anyone's business.

I won't be checking this thread any more, so don't waste your time or do...I couldn't care less.

I was just saying it was interesting that you rushed to assure us you were straight, and I note that you now feel the need to defend that assurance. I also sense someone important in your life with the initial "M", or perhaps "J". But it doesn't matter, because you won't see this or respond to it. Pity. Does your gorgeous wife know you use her as a credential? Or is she in on the con?

written by mercurylass, May 07, 2010
All this has been going on forever, why people havenot evolved to a state of being when humanity is important, not sexual orientation (i hate that phrase)and the rest of bigotry.Dont forget the latest RCC scandels of child abuse, that was covered up
even by the Pope.

This planet and all living on it are in real trouble, climate and stuff, work to fix that, and not waste time on incidentals, except the RCC who are fair game for disgust and distain smilies/angry.gif

Last time I checked the planet was just where I left it, and if you don't like the climate, you can always move to Florida, or New England, or wherever. What disturbs me is this news that the Rosicrucians have been abusing children.
